Capacitive sensors can also be used when the object that is to be detected is not metallic. This type of sensor is therefore very flexible in use. It can, for example, be applied in the detection of levels, or as a hand-held switch.
The capacitive sensor responds to the conductivity of objects as well as to the value of their dielectric constant.
Capacitive sensors are available in the cylindrical body styles M12, M18, M30 and in the various ‘square-shaped’ series.
Sensors are available in the NAMUR, 3-wire and 4-wire formats, and also in an AC version. One NAMUR and one 3-wire type are approved for use in Zone 10 in hazardous areas. This means, for example, that silo installations can be directly monitored, even though there is a danger from potentially explosive dust.
